Study task 1 - Why am i here/ what do i want to learn?

Why I chose to study graphic design at Leeds College of art:

From September 2010 – July 2011 I studied digital photography at London Southbank University, the fast life of London was incredible, but the course defiantly wasn’t for me. I enjoy photography a lot, however I felt I wasn’t producing the work I wanted to, throughout the year I had been looking into Leeds college of art courses, and immediately graphic design described all the things I wanted to be doing, I had visited to the college for an open day and instantly loved Leeds itself, the college- purely because it’s an art institute and all the facilities that were available for the students.
The graphic design course drew me in because of the outcome at the end of the three years for a student, who must of course put the hard work in! Student satisfaction with the course was and is still high. The work being produced by graphic design students on the course is at a professional level; therefore I want to achieve the same.
I've always wanted to study in a specialist art college, because of the arty ambiance.
The people that I’m surrounded by every day in college are either in the same craft as me, aspiring designers/artists or are professional workers of specialist areas willing to teach us their skills and knowledge to succeed in industry.
Even though the graphics course is high demanding, and we spend a lot of time in college working to the limit, it’ll pay off come the end of the course when we’re are prepared for the jobs in industry!

Things I what to learn during my time on the programme:

During my time on the course I am keen to learn knowledge in the various printing techniques, such as letterpress, screen printing and digital print. I’ve never experimented with these methods before, therefore I am enthusiastic to test them, I feel it will give me a better understanding of the ways some graphic design is produced.
I wish to gain confidence in a lot of factors for example my work, I’ve never studied graphic design at A-level or specialised in it much, so I’m unfamiliar with a lot of what exactly is involved, I have skills which I think will help me succeed in the course I’m just unsure how to use them for instance I feel I’m a strong drawer but don’t have flairs in digital software to make the most of what I can produce by hand.
I believe this course will guide me to the point of being able to work Photoshop, and other design programmes to my best advantage. Another confidence boost needs to be in vocal presentations to a class/ any audience, the thought of it panics me, but I understand that it’s an obstacle I’ll have to get over.
I would like to gain knowledge in Photoshop, illustrator and in design as its essential to have skills in them to succeed in the business, and of course to produce much of the work required.

My current strengths:

I've always loved to draw, i feel this is probably my best skill to associate myself with graphic design.
I feel I'm quite a positive person, even with the stress of deadlines i don't let myself get too stressed, keeping a positive attitude will be a better way to complete work on time.
I'm generally a sociable/ approachable person so meeting new people and making new friends on the course will be exciting.
When i get given a project i like to get fully involved and commit to the work.
I love finding new designers and artists not only to familiarise myself with other works but to gain knowledge about design therefore i think i research well.

My current weaknesses:

I'm not very confident with adobe programmes such as illustrator, photoshop and indesign, i've used photoshop for editing photography work but never for design purposes, so i definitely want to improve my abilities of using these.
I'm not at all confident speaking publicly, this is something i really want to work on to be able to speak comfortably in front of my peers and not stumble on my words when trying to explain my work.
Because i don't know an awful lot about graphic design, as I've always been interested in arts and crafts and photography i feel like i need to up my game a little when it comes to understanding what graphics really is, i should spend some of my time investigating the inns and outs of graphics.
I'm not the most organised person so i need to build on this to be able to survive the course.
I lose concentration easily which sometimes leads me to fall behind with work, i definitely need to try harder as i want to be fully committed to the course.

Ways in which i will evaluate my progress:

Keep my blog up to date and blog everyday as its an important part of the course.
Blog artists and designers who inspire me to show how my taste in design may change of the course of the year.
Use notebooks and sketchbooks to annotate and draw my designs.
Post evaluations and important feedback about work onto my ppp blog to show how i am going to progress as a designer.
